First, the glass
Why a broken side window always gets replaced
Most door windows are tempered glass. It is built to break all at once into small, blunt cubes rather than long shards, which is why a single strike with a tool or a rock leaves an empty frame and a seat full of pebbles. Nothing is left to repair, so the only fix is a new pane.
Some newer models use laminated glass in the front doors, the same two-layer build as a windshield. A laminated side window cracks and sags instead of falling out, and it too has to be replaced. If you are not sure which kind you have, a photo of the damage sent by text to (877) 350-5962 tells us.
To quote the right part we need the year, make and model, which door, and whether the window is a front or rear one. The VIN is even better, since it settles tint, heating and acoustic options in one go. We replace door windows on cars, SUVs, vans and pickups. The small fixed pane behind some rear doors, called quarter glass, is not something we do.
The police report
Who takes the report depends on where it happened
Your insurer may ask for a report number. In Jacksonville that usually means the Sheriff's Office, but not everywhere on the map.
| Where the car was | Who takes the report | How |
|---|---|---|
| Most of Jacksonville and Duval County | Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) | Online, if the case fits JSO's criteria; otherwise the non-emergency line listed on jaxsheriff.org |
| Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach or Atlantic Beach | That city's own police department | JSO's online system does not take these; contact the city police |
| University of North Florida or Jacksonville International Airport | The campus or airport police | JSO's online system does not take these either |
| Clay, St. Johns or Nassau County | The sheriff or town police for that place | Ask that agency; JSO covers Duval only |
Call 9-1-1 if anyone is in danger or the person is still nearby.
JSO online reporting
When the online form fits your case
JSO's Citizen's Online Crime Reporting System takes a short list of cases. Its own criteria, in brief:
- The crime is a vehicle burglary, a theft from a vehicle, a simple theft or vandalism, with no firearm or prescription drugs taken.
- It happened inside JSO's area, not in the three Beaches cities, at UNF or at the airport.
- There is no known suspect and no physical evidence for an officer to collect.
- Damage and losses add up to less than $5,000.
- You are 18 or older and can receive email at the address you enter.
JSO says an officer reviews each online report within 24 hours. You get a temporary number starting with a T, then a case number once it is approved. If your case does not fit, call the non-emergency line JSO lists on the same page. Criteria as read on jaxsheriff.org on October 16, 2026.
Until we get there
An open door frame in a Jacksonville summer
Jacksonville's wet season runs from May through September, and its afternoon thunderstorms build fast. A car with a missing window that sits outside through one of them ends up with wet carpet and a soaked door panel, and the door's window motor and switch get a drink too.
Move the car under a roof if you possibly can: a garage, a carport, or a covered level of a parking deck. If it has to stay outside, a heavy contractor bag held on with painter's tape on the painted metal around the frame keeps most of the rain out. Packing tape pulls off clear coat in this heat, and duct tape leaves a gummy mess.
Leave the broken glass where it fell until we arrive, apart from what is on the driver's seat. Most of it is inside the door, and the technician vacuums the door shell, the track and the floor as part of the job.
Paying for it
Insurance or out of pocket
Florida's rule that waives the deductible applies to the windshield only. A door window broken in a break-in or by vandalism is normally a comprehensive claim, and your policy's own deductible applies to it. Without comprehensive coverage, the window is paid out of pocket.
That makes the numbers worth a look before you file. If your deductible is close to the price of the glass, paying yourself may make more sense than a claim; your insurer can tell you how a claim would affect your policy. We give you the price either way, and if you do claim, we help you file it and bill the insurer directly. The insurance page has the Florida details.
Where it happens
Break-ins on the First Coast
Window break-ins are not limited to one side of town. In September 2019, police told reporters that car windows had been smashed 17 times along one Jacksonville Beach street, 1st Street South, in a single morning. In May 2023 at least four cars had windows broken at an apartment complex on Bertha Street in San Marco, a JSO case with no suspect in custody at the time of the report.
Bags, laptops and shopping left in sight are what draw a thief to one car over the next. If it happened in your apartment lot or at work, we can replace the window in the same space, as long as the property allows it.
On the day
What the technician does at the car
- Takes off the inside door panel and lifts out any glass still stuck in the frame.
- Vacuums the broken glass from inside the door, the window track, the seat and the floor.
- Sets the new window in the regulator and checks that it runs up and down cleanly and seals at the top.
- Puts the door panel, switches and speaker back and tests the power window and lock.
Most installs take about 30–45 minutes. Installs run Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm.

Car window questions
Ask us on our Jacksonville line, (904) 900-2264, or by text at (877) 350-5962.
Can a shattered car window be repaired instead of replaced?
No. Tempered side glass breaks into small pieces all at once, so there is nothing left to repair. Laminated side glass cracks in place, and it also has to be replaced.
My car was broken into at Jacksonville Beach. Does JSO take the report?
No. Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach each have their own police, and JSO's online form does not take cases from those three cities. Call that city's department. The glass itself can go in before you have a report number, though your insurer may ask for one on a break-in claim.
Does Florida's windshield rule cover a broken door window?
No. The Florida rule that waives the deductible covers the windshield only. A door window claim normally goes under your comprehensive deductible. We check your coverage with you before booking.
Can you replace the window where the car was broken into?
Usually, yes, as long as the car is parked off the road and the property allows the work. Apartment lots, office lots and driveways all work.
Do you replace the small triangle window by the back door?
No. That is quarter glass, which we do not offer. We replace door windows, back glass, sunroofs and windshields.
